What This Day Holds

This story picks up where Sifting Through the Past left off. In this chapter, Asher has returned to his childhood home with Kohana in an attempt to find more answers to the disturbing mysteries he has encountered in his own family’s past…

Kohana: I thought maybe I’d find you out here.
Asher: I didn’t want to wake you. But I had to get out of the house. All those boxes waiting to be opened…

Kohana: I understand.
Asher: I think maybe you do.

Kohana: Now that I know you’re okay, I’ll go back and wait for you.
Asher: No – stay with me, if you don’t mind.
Kohana: All right.

Asher: When I was a kid, I’d come here to think about my mom. I was only three when she died, so I’m sure a lot of what I thought I was remembering was probably imagined – how I wanted it to be instead of how it ever really was…

Asher: So today I’m all mixed up. I can guess about why Grandma left me to my illusions, but in a way, finding out the truth now is like losing her all over again.
Kohana: Your grandmother?
Asher: Yes. And my mother.

Kohana: I’m not silly enough to think I can do much for you, but if there is anything, you have only to ask.
Asher: You’ve done so much already, just being here. I would not have wanted to face this alone.

Asher: I should get back, start going through all those papers. But I just don’t want to.
Kohana: You’re afraid of what you might find.
Asher: Yeah. You know a lot more about my grandmother now. Anything that would keep her from telling us the truth has got to be pretty bad.
Kohana: Maybe you should take heart in the fact that she did tell you after all. Maybe it’s just something that had to wait a bit.

Asher: Thing is, I can’t imagine what that reason would be.
Kohana: Then let’s go back and find out, shall we?
Asher: Just a couple more minutes….

Asher: Grandma used to say…. “Start your day the way you mean to end it, and the troubles that slip in between won’t matter so much.”

Asher: So I’m telling you right now… I love you. When the sun goes down, I’m going to tell you again. Whatever secrets this day holds….

Asher: I do know what really matters.
