Not Your Usual

Eli: Hey Bro, want to go grab a beer or something?
Eron: Can’t. After I finish here I’m heading to the greenhouse. Need to take a look at my grafts.
Eli: Geez, you’re no fun. You spend all your time playing in the dirt these days.

Eron: Not just these days. I’ve always spent my time this way.
Eli: Not so much. This is just since that trip you took, last fall….
Eron: Don’t bring that up again.
Eli: What? Come on Eron, something happened; you haven’t ever said much about it.

Eron: Nothing happened. I’m just not happy that I wasted a week chasing down one of your harebrained ideas, that’s all.
Eli: It could have made you, Bro.
Eron: I don’t want to be “made.”

Eli: Think of what it could have meant if you had gotten that account.
Eron: I didn’t want the account – YOU wanted it. Wish you’d just leave me alone to run the business like Grandma used to do. I don’t want to expand.
Eli: All right, all right. I hear you. But you’re not “running” it – you’re just crawling along.

Eron: Not everyone is comfortable in hyperdrive, Eli.
Eli: Slow is one thing, Eron. You’re still poking around in the nineteenth century.
Eron: I know one thing - I am not going to do the twin switching thing with you ever again. Should have quit that for good when I was ten.
Eli: So something did happen on that trip.
Eron: I told you – don’t go there. Go get interested in one of your own projects and leave me to run my business and play in the dirt.

Eli: See, that’s the whole trouble. The only project I’m interested in now isn’t business at all…
Eron: I know. It’s that girl, isn’t it?
Eli: Yeah. She’s real different, you know?
Eron: Sure isn’t your usual. From what I hear, she actually has a brain. Uses it too - she didn’t fall all over you when you tried your usual routine. That alone gets her high marks from me.

Eli: Hey, don’t diss the usual routine. The usual….. usually works.
Eron: But not with her.
Eli: Nope…. not with her. Which is why I need to find some other approach.
Eron: I don’t know Eli, maybe you shouldn’t look at this your usual way - like you’re going after some prize or something. You know how you always lose interest once you win. I get the feeling this girl could be real hurt if you pulled that.

Eli: Who says I’m going to be pulling anything? Maybe I’m different this time, too.
Eron: Huh. I’ll believe that when I see it.
