Pete quickly got back to “normal life,” such as it is, after Persephone returned home. I’m glad he’s an optimistic sort and refuses to mope about the house being depressed. Although, come to think of it, he is a bit quieter than usual. Maybe he’s recalling their last conversation….
Pete: I keep trying to figure you out.
Persephone: And you feel the need to do this, to what purpose?
Pete: I don’t know. Maybe so there’re no surprises.
Persephone: I operated under the theory that you enjoyed surprises.
Pete: I do - sometimes. Well, the good ones.
Persephone: So, by your reasoning, if you do not “figure me out”, my “surprise” may well be of the disagreeable sort, then?
Pete: No, I don’t think that.
Pete: Guess I didn’t say that right.
Persephone: Apparently you did not.
Pete: I mean, you’ve already surprised me. Over and over. Not only because of the things you do, but because of what you’re like….
Pete: …I never used to see myself with someone who was super-smart. See, growing up with my big sister Lucy made me think it wouldn’t be much fun, dating that kind of girl. Lucy doesn’t make time for anything fun, not that I can tell. She’s so serious all the time. But you – you’re super-smart, but you have this amazing, offbeat sense of humor, so you’re fun to be with.
Persephone: I do believe you are saying it better now, Peter.
Pete: You have to go home really soon, so I don’t have much more time to figure you out.
Persephone: Let me understand……. You are not trying to figure me out, really. You are in fact, wondering…
Pete: What happens next? Yeah, I guess that’s what I want to know.
Persephone: What would you like to have happen next?
Pete: Well, I’d like to follow you home, have some more time to spend with you, but that’s not possible right now. So I guess what I need to know is….. if it becomes possible later on…..will there still be a reason for me to make the trip?
