Silent Company

Laurelin: Why are you sitting all alone out here?
Eron: (silence)
Laurelin: I’m sorry – I do not mean to intrude.
Eron: It’s okay.

Laurelin: Is anything wrong, Eron?
Eron: *sighs* Everything is wrong, Laurelin.
Laurelin: Would it help to talk about it?

Eron: With a stranger? I doubt it….… I know you’re not a total stranger, but we don’t know each other very well, so you might as well be.
Laurelin: A stranger is not what you need now; I believe it is a friend you need. I will leave you alone with your thoughts.

Eron: Laurelin. I’m sorry.

Laurelin: There is no reason for you to be sorry.
Eron: It was rude of me to turn away your gesture of concern. But you don’t have to worry about me – no matter what it seems like.
Laurelin: I know only that you seem very sad.

Eron: Have you ever had your world knocked sideways?

Laurelin: (a little confused) I do not believe so….
Eron: What I mean is, when things you think are true turn out not to be, and someone you trusted your whole life turns out to be unworthy of that trust.
Laurelin: Has that happened to you, Eron?

Eron: Yeah.
Laurelin: I am sorry.
Eron: Not your problem, but thanks. I shouldn’t have come out here, but all I could think about was getting away. I knew Eli would be busy with Cassandra and that meant I wouldn’t have to talk to him about it. But if I stayed home, Asher would want to…..

Laurelin: What is it? Go on….
Eron: Not here, not now. It’s not the time.
Laurelin: Shall I leave you then?
Eron: No….. stay…..if you want to…… I don’t have anything to say right now, but I’d be pleased to have your company…. if you don’t mind a little silence.

Eron: You were right – a friend is exactly what I needed.
