Her Sacred Schedule

Kaida: Hey Asher.
Asher: Hi Shortstuff. What’s up? You don’t seem your chipper self today.
Kaida: Well, Kenzo went home a couple days ago, you know?
Asher: Yeah I knew that. That what’s bothering you?

Kaida: Pretty much. And it doesn’t help that things are slow at school and here at the theater right now. It would be better if I could be busier. So I was wondering…
Asher: About?
Kaida: Could I maybe spend a little more time down here for a while? Say, a few evenings a week? Maybe you could train me more on the sound board or lights and things. You know I want to learn that stuff too.

Asher: Well, maybe….I’ll have to think about it.
Kaida: And it would fit right into Kohana’s schedule too. She’s got some real late classes this semester so....
Asher: Oh she does, does she? How late?
Kaida: I think she said she gets off around eight thirty from the last one and gets home a little before ten or so and….

Asher: (looking up seeing Kohana in the doorway) Is this true, what Kaida’s telling me? You have classes all night long now too?
Kohana: Well hello to you, too. Yes, some nights I will be staying rather late due to…

Asher: (getting angry) Just what are you trying to do to yourself? How can you keep up a pace like that? Come on, Kohana, you’re human, believe it or not. You need to sleep and eat and do other things like the rest of us mortals.
Kohana: I’ll have plenty of time for those other things….that’s why I….

Asher: Yeah, and I can tell just what kind of priority you place on those “other things” too. In your sacred schedule…
Kohana: (angry now) My schedule is my business. I know myself better than you know me. I certainly know what I can and cannot handle.

Asher: Maybe you do. But you sure cut me out of the equation, didn’t you? Geez, Kohana, if you need time away just take it; don’t kill yourself with extra schoolwork just to avoid….
Kohana: You know nothing, Asher. My schedule won’t be easy but it is possible. As for time with you, I’ve already….
Asher: I suppose I get a few minutes on weekends, for which I should be grateful, of course.

Kohana: If you’d only….
Asher: Understand? Not this time. I can’t sit here and say nothing while you insist on taking on more every semester. But you know what? Now I’ve said my piece - you do what you want. I suppose Kaida can stay and work with me. At least she’ll have someone to hang out with and won’t have to be home by herself.

Kohana: Very well then. Can she start today? I have to go back….
Asher: Yeah, I’ll see she gets home tonight. See you around. If you get the time.

Kaida: Um…Asher? I know you’re not in the best mood, but can I say something?
Asher: Might as well.
Kaida: Well all I have to say is – you….uh… really messed up there – bigtime.

Asher: Yeah, I know. Your sister’s schedule is untouchable, isn’t it? And I dared to complain about it, like I had a right or something.
Kaida: You didn’t listen to her – she tried to explain.
Asher: What’s to explain? She wants to be too busy for me, she just adds some classes. Her business, just like she says.

Kaida: That’s not what she did, Asher. She adjusted her schedule, sure, but she did it for you. Those late classes? They’re so she can go only three days a week instead of every day. She wasn’t able to get into all daytime classes because she just made her mind up to reshuffle everything last week, but she thought maybe if she had four whole days off every week, a few late evenings wouldn’t matter so much.

Asher: Damn! What are you saying?
Kaida: That Kohana changed her schedule just for you. And she’s never, ever done that before. For anyone.

Asher: Why didn’t she say anything? Man, I couldn’t have messed up any more if I was trying to….
Kaida: She tried, Asher, she tried to explain but…..

Asher: Gotta go Kaida. Hold down the fort for me, huh? (he leaves quickly)

Kaida: Go get her, Big Guy. Hope it’s not too late….
