Pain in the Neck (Part One)

Andrea and Gideon have met at a favorite breakfast spot during a break in filming

Andrea: Are you laughing at me?
Gideon: Not at you; at wardrobe and makeup’s attempts to make you look dowdy.
Andrea: You don’t think I look the part?

Gideon: I’m only saying they couldn’t make you look plain even dressing you in a sack. Which, actually, is appropriate for your role – you’re not supposed to have been successful at toning down your… shall we say… seductive nature…

Andrea: I think, in your backhanded way, I may have just been complimented.

Gideon: *smiling* Could be. Don’t let it go to your head.

Andrea: Oh, I shan’t, kind sir. ‘Twould be most unseemly of this fair maiden.

Gideon: Indeed it would. Most unseemly.

Andrea: Look here….. (pointing to a notice in a magazine) It says that Canaan Abernathy is in town, looking up contacts and signing autographs. He’s supposed to stop right here this weekend. I know someone who loves watching him on “Tumultuous Love.” I wonder if I could manage to get an autograph for her?
Gideon: I can’t believe anyone loves that guy enough to actually watch that soap. His acting is appalling.

Andrea: *laughs a little* Who said anything about his acting? He’s awfully pretty to look at…. Isn’t that enough?
Gideon: Maybe you think so. I think after four years on a show he should have learned his craft a little better.

Andrea: Really? I hear he has two daytime Emmy’s and he’s been nominated again this year.
Gideon: The “honors” no doubt purchased with a chunk of the family fortune.
Andrea: Oh, come on, Gideon. Surely even his family’s money could not have purchased that many awards.

Gideon: Given his complete lack of talent and ambition, I’d say that’s the most likely scenario.
Andrea: You don’t think it has anything to do with his outrageous appeal?
Gideon: Outrageous is right. It’s an outrage that he calls himself an actor. Guys like him tend to give serious actors a pain in the neck.

Andrea: Hmmmm, I think someone is sounding a bit like sour grapes. Could it be that you are a little jealous of him?
Gideon: Could it be you’re the one with a thing for him, and not your supposed “someone?”

Andrea: I'm afraid not. I don’t have time, or the inclination, to watch the soaps.
Gideon: Could we just drop it then?

Andrea: Fine with me.

*Andrea tucks the tear-out information card into her bag…

… which does not go unnoticed by Gideon*
