After visitng the salon, Melisa and Karissa continue on to the mall where new wardrobe possibilities await. While Karissa tries on several outfits from the ones Melisa has chosen for her, Melisa waits outside the fitting room, thumbing through magazines and making encouraging comments while Karissa’s chatter becomes more animated.
Karissa: *from inside the fitting room* You kept your promise, Mellie! You aren’t trying to turn me into a mini-you.
Melisa: Of course not, Mou….Karrie. I told you we would find your style. It would hardly be yours if it was already mine, now would it?
Karissa: But…. I never expected to like it! I look so different with my hair this way….this is going to be great!
Melisa: *indulgent smile* What are you trying on first?
Karissa: *giggles* Um… the plaid pleated skirt outfit?
Melisa: *smiles* That figures. You and your plaids and pleats.
Karissa: This is way different, though. Isn’t it different?
Melisa: Yes, Karrie, it certainly is. Sometimes the smallest changes make for wonderful differences.
Karissa: I mean, the style is still kinda retro, you know? But it’s trendy too, right?
Melisa: It’s trendy enough, yes… *not quite under her breath* It had better be, at these prices…
Karissa: It’s not too much, is it? I can ask David for…
Melisa: No, this is my treat, remember? Anyway, you’ll be returning the favor, I promise. Just as soon as you do that research for me.
Karissa: Is it really involved research? I mean, will it take like forever to do? What do I have to do? You keep saying you’ll tell me later.
Melisa: If you keep the right attitude about it, it should be fun. It’s not library or internet research I have in mind, Mous…. Karrie. If I needed that kind done, I’d just put one of the cubicle monkeys at the paper on it for me. This is genuine, on-the-scene, covert research.
Karissa: Covert? As in under-cover? Way cool!
Melisa: Now see, Karrie? Get you into a new ‘do and some clothing that flatters you, and you can’t help but pop right out of that shell of yours. I’m glad to see you’re excited about the prospect.
Karissa: It’s like a cosplay game, really, isn’t it? That’s what this feels like, to me. Like I’m getting into a costume.
Melisa: *thinks* Or a disguise…
Karissa: Ok…… Ready or not, here I come!
*Karissa exits the fitting room*
Karissa: Ta-da!
Melisa: Hmmmm……well…..let’s see……..turn around…..
Karissa: Come on, you’re killing me here! What do you think?
Melisa: I think we’ve found your style – what do you think?
Karissa: I think I owe you a really thorough research assignment.
