Just An Act

Asher: Hey, Kaida, what’s up?
Kaida: Oh nothing – just here for my daily torture session.
Asher: Torture session? That’s how you look at your opportunity to rehearse with the cast? Aren’t you interested in acting anymore?
Kaida: Oh no, this is still a lot of fun – if it wasn’t for all the waiting around, anyway. That's the torture -you know I can’t stand being bored. You have to know that – I’m always over here bugging you.

Asher: And you know I don’t mind a bit. I like talking to you about what I’m doing – it’s nice to know someone has a real interest. So… how are things in the rest of your world? Everything going well with the boyfriend?
Kaida: Oh yeah, everything’s cool. “Course it would be more fun if he was here, but everything’s just fine.
Asher: School?
Kaida: Eh, boring as ever, but no problems.

Asher: And at home? With your sister?
Kaida: Oh, things are great with Kohana too….errrr…..wanna come over and see for yourself?

Asher: Now Kaida…..
Kaida: I’m never gonna give up on it – you oughtta know that right up front!

Asher: Well I suppose if it gets too bad I can always do this (puts headphones on) and tune you out!
Kaida: You wouldn’t!.....uh…. would you?
Asher: Sure I would. Teach you a lesson. So…. Nothing wrong at home you say?
Kaida: No, why do you keep asking that?

Asher: Well, I was real surprised when your sister called today. She thinks you’re upset about something – says you seem sad and aren’t talking much at all. I have to tell you I found that part a little hard to believe.
Kaida: That’s funny, I wonder why she would think tha………. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Asher: What are you up to now?

Kaida: Nothing! I was um… oh this is too funny…… I was acting, Asher. Practicing, you know, like you said I needed to do. One of the actors gave me a few pointers from her acting class. Hee hee hee – I must be getting good if I fooled Kohana! I never even thought she’d notice…
Asher: I’m sure you must be improving then. Hey, make sure you tell her what you’ve been doing when you get home – she was worried.

Kaida: Really? Like, totally worried? Oh man, no wonder I don’t get away with much! I tell ya Asher, my sister is a pretty good actor herself. She acts like she’s not paying attention but she takes everything in. No fair I tell ya, absolutely No fair.
Asher: Well you go set her straight, ok? Bet you’re enough of a worry to her normally – she doesn’t need to worry about something that isn’t a problem.
Kaida: Oh I will, but…. You sure YOU don’t want to come over, check out my story personally? Hmmmm?

Asher: (laughing) You’re too much! Now go rehearse!

Asher: Kohana? Mystery solved, I think.
Kohana: Oh, already? What is wrong with Kaida?
Asher: She tells me she was acting, practicing her moods. She thought you wouldn’t notice.
Kohana: Oh she did, did she? She must be getting rather good at it then – looked like the real thing to me.
Asher: She must be improving.
Kohana: But….
Asher: What is it?

Kohana: I should have known, shouldn’t I? Or at least asked her openly about it? I should be taking a more active interest in what she is doing. If I hadn’t been neglecting…
Asher: Kohana, she is almost an adult herself. You did the right thing, asking someone else, asking me. Sometimes when you’re too close to someone you can’t see what’s right there all the time. But she’s fine and that’s what really matters.
Kohana: I wish I had your positive way of looking at things. I was wrong about you, you know? I guess I really can trus…………… What, Kaida? Oh sorry Asher, I have to go. Thank you again, very much.

Asher: Damn.
