If He, If She

Gideon: Usually I try to avoid the cliché bit, but I can’t help wondering if I know you.
Devon: I don’t believe you do. Why do you ask?
Gideon: I keep looking around and meeting your eyes – you’ve been watching me.
Devon: And if I have been?
Gideon: If you were, that might indicate that you’re interested. And if you were interested, I would want you to know that your interest was returned.
Devon: If that was the case, what would you do to let me know?
Gideon: I suppose a guy would have to resort to the cliché bit again, and offer to buy the lady a drink.
Devon: To which the lady would make the obvious reply, and tell him that she already has one.
Gideon: At which time, not being easily discouraged, he would offer another, or just ask her to join him.
Devon: To which she would say yes.
Gideon: (laughs) Gideon Bennett.
Devon: Danae Lastner.
Gideon: Hmmm, he cannot help but ponder if that is her real name, or a name she gives a stranger in a bar.
Devon: In response she will choose to keep her own counsel.
Gideon: But her vocabulary leads him to believe she is comfortable within the legal world. Perhaps….. an attorney? She is much too sharp for a paralegal, although she may have started out that way.
Devon: She thinks she will keep quiet and allow him to weave his little tale about who and what she is. She finds his suppositions rather fascinating; they tell her more about him than he might guess.
Gideon: No need to guess; I’m open about myself, about what I do.
Devon: (laughs) Oh, I’m sure you are. So, Gideon Bennett, what is it that you do?
Gideon: I’m an actor. No…. really. An employed actor. Unlike many of my fellow thespians, I try to remain firmly grounded in reality; so I would venture to say that you will have never heard of me. I work Broadway mostly, some Off-, some Off-Off if necessary, to stay busy and keep my name out there.
Devon: So you are not choosy about what you will do?
Gideon: Oh, no, don’t get me wrong. I am very selective about which role I take on, but the venue is pretty much up for grabs. In fact, that’s why I’m here. Trying something new.
Devon: Oh?
Gideon: Always wanted to do a road show. This one was tempting.
Devon: Well, Gideon, IF I was the type to engage in such flattery, I would say with your looks, smooth delivery, and ambition you should eventually be a complete success.
Gideon: And IF she was to say that, he might find himself flattered enough to ask…..
Devon: If she was the type to be so easily charmed, she might…..
Gideon: If he was the kind to believe in fate, he might believe meeting her was not by chance but destiny…..
