Her Birthday

Kohana's birthday was actually last Friday. Real life intervenes sometimes, and I couldn't get this completed in time to celebrate on the exact day. I don't think Asher and Kohana minded too much, somehow.
Kohana: Hi Asher. Kaida asked me to stop by for her tonight – do you know where she is?
Asher: She’s around, hang on a minute, though. I wanted to see you first.
Kohana: Oh? Didn’t we just talk on the phone before I left school?
Asher: We did, but you know I prefer face-to-face to some disembodied voice, even when it’s your voice. And…. I missed you.
Kohana: I’m so sorry, Asher, I had to put in that extra time this week…
Asher: Kohana, I know how hard you work. And how much you compromised so we could spend more time together. I’m not complaining, only saying I missed you - because I really did.
Kohana: I miss you too, when I can’t see you.
Asher: That’s all that matters, then.
Asher: C’mere. I wish you hadn’t had class tonight, because I wanted to do this in a different setting.
Kohana: Do what?
Asher: Happy Birthday, Kohana.
Kohana: You knew?
Asher: Sure I did.
Kohana: But you never said… How did you know? – I don’t remember telling you.
Asher: It’s one of the first things I asked Kaida – shortly after she introduced us. How come you never mentioned it?
Kohana: I don’t know – just didn’t think to, I suppose.
Asher: It’s such an important one, too. Twenty-one. Want to go out barhopping now that you’re legal?
Kohana: Umm…. no…I don’t really think…..I do hope you’re kidding me, Asher.
Asher: Of course I am.
Kohana: Well that’s good.
Asher: We’ll wait until after the weekend, when the bars aren’t as crowded. Now open your gift.
Kohana: All right, I will.
Kohana: Oh, Asher, it’s lovely. And it’s my birthstone - Thank you.
Asher: I was hoping you would like it. It reminded me of you.
Kohana: Because it’s my birthstone?
Asher: No, because it’s unique and beautiful…. a true one of a kind.
Asher: (whispers) Happy Birthday.
