Apologies and Conditions, Part One

Asher: Kohana. Kaida said you wanted to speak with me?
Kohana: Oh! Yes, I……..I did….. I do. I…..
Asher: What can I do for you?
Kohana: Oh! Nothing, I….. well maybe if you would….. oh, this is so hard.
Asher: It’s ok. Take your time.
Kohana: I wouldn’t dare ask you to do anything for me…… other than to accept my apology for my behavior the other day….. I’m very sorry for…. for the way I acted. What I said was totally uncalled for, and I had no right….. it’s really been bothering me…
Asher: I’ll be happy to accept your apology – but there’s a condition.
Kohana: Condition?
Asher: Yeah, my “condition” is that you try to forgive yourself. You were only doing what you thought was necessary to protect your sister, and that’s totally understandable. So don’t beat yourself up over it. I’ve already forgotten about it.
Kohana: Well. That’s very kind of you. Thank you. I mean, okay…. I mean….
Asher: I have another condition.
Kohana: Another…?
Asher: I would like to be able to remain friends with Kaida. She’s a nice kid and there aren’t enough like her around the theater sometimes. I can keep an eye out for her here, where you’re not able to.
Kohana: She does take some watching sometimes, doesn’t she? She’s just so friendly and trusting and I am so afraid someone will take advantage of that and hurt her someday because of it.
Asher: Well, it won’t be me. She’s more like a little sister to me. Really. But I’m afraid I have one more request…
Kohana: Another condition?
Asher: No, this one’s more of a favor, really. I’d like for us to be friends too, on whatever level you want. Do you think that’s possible?
Kohana: Oh….. I don’t think I’d make a very good friend, Asher. I’m too…. protective…. of my time, my sister …… myself. I don’t know about that….
Asher: All I ask is that you think about it. I think you’d make a terrific friend – you’re serious and loyal and caring; anybody would be really lucky to have a friend like that.
Kohana: Oh! Well….I… suppose I could….. at least think about it. But just friends, right?
Asher: Sure, Kohana, just friends. Think about it, okay?
